Amaya Lake Dambulla

We checked in at around 7 pm with our toddler after booking a three-night stay. Given our late arrival, I expected the room allocation to have been sorted in advance, especially for a family with a young child. Instead, we were given Room 71, which was around a 10-minute walk from the main facilities. While there is a buggy service, it can take 5–10 minutes to arrive, making it inconvenient when travelling with a pram that needs to be folded every time. More importantly, the room had a strong sewage smell and was infested with ants. It was also the room furthest from the reception and restaurant, located next to an area labelled on the hotel map as the “junk yard” and sewage facilities, which did little to inspire confidence. To their credit, the staff were understanding and quickly arranged a room change after I complained. We were moved to Room 5, which was much more conveniently located. Unfortunately, that room had its own issues. The air-conditioning remote didn’t work, meaning the unit could only be left fully on or switched off, and the bed creaked loudly with every movement, making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. After two nights, we decided to cut our stay short and leave. On the positive side, the location is absolutely stunning, with breathtaking scenery around the lake. The breakfast and dinner buffet were decent—nothing exceptional, but perfectly acceptable for the price. Overall, while the setting is beautiful, the quality of the rooms and maintenance let the hotel down. I’d recommend spending a little more for a better hotel, especially if you’re travelling with young child

We had a great time here and the service was great. The rooms are a bit far away from the reception but they have carts which bring you no matter the time. There are two nice pools close to the lake. Especially chef madura and shashintha were great helping us during dinner and later when we wanted some drinks and wanted to watch some football. All together a great experience and at a very nice spot in the country. I would advise going on a safari watching the elephants.

I recently returned to Amaya Lake after nearly 8 years, having visited several times in the past. While the lake and gardens remain beautiful, the overall experience was disappointing compared to what the resort once offered. The rooms are in urgent need of renovation. We encountered worn-out bathroom fittings, a bathroom door that wouldn’t lock, a broken dustbin, an ill-fitting toilet seat, and an unpleasant smell in the bathroom. Even the lobby washrooms lacked basic hand wash dispensers. Small details such as missing hand towels at check-in and the absence of a proper duvet also affected the comfort we expected from a resort of this standard. The buffet had limited variety and became repetitive, particularly at breakfast and lunch. Fresh tropical fruits like mangoes and pineapples were surprisingly absent, and bacon was available only on request without informing guests. Service was inconsistent—I even had to repeatedly request a waffle after waiting despite leaving my plate at the station. When I asked about future renovations, I was told the focus was on maintaining the resort’s “culture” rather than renovating. Unfortunately, the warm atmosphere and cultural charm that once made Amaya Lake special were no longer evident. Amaya Lake is still blessed with a stunning location, but the rooms, food, service, and overall guest experience have declined considerably. I hope the resort restores the high standards and unique charm that made it such a memorable destination in the past.

Our stay at Amaya Lake Dambulla was nothing but magical.From the lush green surroundings to the beautiful chalets, every corner of the resort promotes relaxation.The senior manager and his management team deserves immense praise for how seamlessly the resort operates. Check-in was smooth, the property was very well maintained and and the food was delicious.Everyone—from the front desk and housekeeping to the restaurant crew—greeted us with genuine smiles and prompt assistance.We also had the pleasure in experiencing the Ayurvedic treatments and spa and the in-house Ayurvedic doctor, with her professional, compassionate, and holistic approach was very uptodate and very comforting.This is definitely a must visit place in Sri Lanka.

Had a wonderful stay here. The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, making the stay very relaxing. The housekeeping service was excellent, with the room kept tidy and everything arranged properly. The staff were friendly, polite, and very helpful throughout the stay.
